Gym Wear in Nigeria: What to Train In When It's 32°C
How to choose gym wear for Nigerian heat: fit, fabric weight, jorts vs joggers for training, and how to wash sweat-heavy kit so it lasts.
Updated October 2026
Training in Nigeria means training in heat. Most gyms in Lagos, Ibadan and Abuja are warm even with fans running, and outdoor sessions are hotter still. The right gym wear is not about logos: it is about fit, fabric weight and how the kit survives being washed three times a week. This guide covers what to look for, jorts vs joggers for training, and how to care for sweat-heavy kit. If you want to see what we make for training, it is all in our gym wear collection: the Sparta Gym Jorts, the Sparta Gym Joggers and the Onyx Male Tank.
What to look for in gym wear for hot weather
Fit first
Loose kit lets air move between the fabric and your skin. That matters more than any "cooling" label. For bottoms, a relaxed or wide leg gives you room to squat and lunge without the fabric pulling. For tops, a tank leaves your shoulders and arms free and lets heat escape.
Fabric that holds its shape
Thin, cheap polyester feels light in the shop but clings when wet, goes see-through and loses its shape after a few washes. A heavier, structured fabric hangs away from the body, stays opaque and looks the same after months of washing.
Waistbands and pockets
An elastic waist with a drawcord means nothing slides down mid-set. Pockets deep enough for a phone and a key save you from leaving valuables on the bench.
Can you wear it out after?
Most of us go from the gym to the shop, to campus or home in the same clothes. Kit that looks like streetwear saves you a change of clothes.
Jorts vs joggers for training
| Gym jorts | Gym joggers | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Leg days, cardio, outdoor sessions, the hottest hours | Upper-body days, warm-ups, travel, cooler mornings and evenings |
| Heat | Coolest option: legs are open | Warmer, but a wide leg still lets air move |
| Movement | Full knee freedom | Full movement if the leg is wide, not tapered |
| After the gym | Easy street look with a tee | Covers more for errands, church-to-gym or office-to-gym days |
Many people own both: jorts for the session and joggers to pull on over them afterwards.
Tank vs tee for training
A tank frees your shoulders for pressing and pulling and lets heat escape from your sides. The problem with most tanks is that they are thin vests that go see-through when wet. A structured tank solves that. A boxy tee is the better choice if you prefer more coverage or train outside in direct sun.
Our gym wear
Sparta Gym Jorts: ₦19,000
An oversized, knee-length fit with room to move, made from a heavyweight fabric that keeps a clean, structured look. They work in the gym and on the street. Black, navy, brown or wine.
Sparta Gym Joggers: ₦17,500
A relaxed, wide-leg fit for unrestricted movement. Heavyweight fabric with a structured drape, plus an elastic waistband, adjustable drawcord and practical pockets. Same four colours as the jorts, so they make an easy set.
Onyx Male Tank: ₦16,500
Thicker and more structured than a standard vest, so it holds its shape and is not see-through. A clean silhouette that works alone in the heat or under an open shirt after training. Black, navy or white.
Both Sparta pieces are unisex; the Onyx is cut for men. Women training in our kit often pair the Sparta pieces with the Cypher Women Tank.
Three gym-to-street outfits
- Onyx Tank + Sparta Jorts, both black. The simplest training fit, and it looks put together walking home.
- Sparta Joggers + boxy tee. For upper-body days or when you are heading somewhere after. Try a Root Boxy Tee.
- Matching Sparta set in brown or wine. Jorts for the session, joggers on top for the ride home.
How to wash sweat-heavy gym kit
- Do not leave it in your bag. Wet kit sitting in a bag is where the smell starts. Hang it to air as soon as you get home.
- Wash cold and inside out. Cold water protects the fabric and any print; inside out puts the sweaty side against the water.
- Skip the dryer. Line-dry in the shade. Strong direct sun fades dark colours over time.
- Go easy on fabric softener. It can leave a coating that traps odour in sportswear.
- Rotate. If you train four days a week, two sets means each one gets a full wash and dry between sessions.
Questions to ask any gym wear brand before you buy
Whether you buy from us or anyone else, these questions separate good kit from kit that falls apart:
- Is the fabric opaque when wet? Ask for a photo in natural light, or read reviews that mention sweat.
- What is the leg opening and length? These two numbers tell you more about fit than "S, M, L".
- How does the waist close? Elastic plus a drawcord is the most secure for squats and deadlifts.
- Where does it ship from, and how fast? Local brands can usually deliver within days; imports can take weeks and add customs costs.
- What happens if it arrives damaged or wrong? Read the returns policy before you pay. Ours is on the returns page.

Gym wear FAQ
Are baggy shorts good for the gym?
Yes, as long as the waist is secure and the fabric does not cling. A wide leg gives you more freedom for squats and lunges than tight shorts.
What colour gym wear hides sweat best?
Black and navy hide sweat marks best. Light grey shows them the most.
Can I wear the Sparta pieces for running?
For short runs and conditioning, yes. For long-distance running, most runners prefer lighter, shorter shorts.
Where can I buy gym wear in Ibadan?
You can order online and we deliver from Ibadan, with Oyo State delivery at ₦3,000. See the full gym wear collection.
